A Wonderful Start to SY25-26

We are off to a great school year start! Students have returned with smiles, excitement, and readiness to learn. Classroom teachers will be posting specific updates and celebrations. Please reach out to them with any questions about your students' first days back to school.

Continuous Improvement Goals

Each year, schools in Vermont set goals to guide our work with students and families as well as our growth as professionals. We have two main goals for this year that are listed below.

Academic Goal:
By June 2026, all students, k-12, will make one year’s growth in both reading and math.

Safe + Healthy School Goal:
By supporting all children’s social emotional wellness, at the end of June 2026, the percentage of students identified as chronically absent will decrease by 50% compared to 24-25 levels.

--------------------
Chronic absenteeism is typically defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days, or approximately 18 days in a year, for any reason, excused or unexcused.

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminder

When dropping off and picking up students, please drive through the loop in the back of the school, pull over and wait for students to come to your car. If you are getting out of your car to pick up students, sit at the picnic tables, or going into the school, please park your car in the parking lot so others can use the loop quickly.

A special reminder that when you drive around the school building for pick up, we have high school students getting into their cars. Please be aware of students crossing parking lots. There is also a one way road while driving around the building. Please do not drive the opposite direction.

Notes from Nurse Alice

Welcome back everyone!

School is back, and hugs and high fives mean lots of germ sharing!
The best way to curb germ spread is still hand washing. Please encourage your kids to wash well and often, and we will do the same at school.

Here are the CCSU illness guidelines to help you decide if your student should attend school.

Please review these guidelines carefully, and know that once a student is fever free without the use of medications and is well enough to make it through a whole day of school, we would love to have them back. Students do not typically have to be totally symptom free before returning to school. The school year is short and we want to see their smiley faces as much as possible!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Program Spotlights

Summer Learning Program 2025

Our summer program was a success again. We want to give a huge shout out to Pam Quinn and Nicky Auberach who were our site directors this year. We had approximately 103 students in grades first through twelfth. Students engaged in art projects, collaborative games, hands-on science projects, and focused math and literacy activities.

Below are comments from families about their students' experience at our summer program:
  • Everyone was enthusiastic and my kids had a blast!
  • The whole program worked well so I could work and not have to worry as much about where my daughter was
  • I love the schedule of the program being just four days a week and getting done at 2:00. That being said, I appreciated the week we could drop off early and I do wonder if the limited schedule allows those who most need it to take advantage of the program. The mix of learning time and “fun” is so perfect - I love knowing my child is getting some academic practice but also getting to experience a camp like setting in an environment she is comfortable in.
  • Neither of my kids wanted to go to summer school, but agreed to "try it." They came home on the first day wet and happy and never asked to stay home again!
  • We appreciate the balance of academic, creative and outdoor opportunities!
  • Summer program went very smoothly
  • It was great that the summer learning camp was offered for the solid month of July. We are fortunate to have folks who were dedicated to make the program happen this summer. Thank you!!

Twinfield After School

Our after school program is up and running and clubs for middle and high school students will start next week. For specific club details, click here or contact our program director, Michelle Delaney. (Michelle.Delaney@ccsuvt.net)

Twinfield is one of the few schools to provide as after school program for middle and high school students, and we are looking forward to our new offerings and seeing the positive connections that come from this program.

Denmark + Twinfield Democracy Project

The Twinfield Democracy Project was formed with the cooperation of Twinfield staff and students to promote civic engagement among the entire Twinfield community. The TDP has organized community conversations, contributed to a robust civics curriculum, organized a democracy exchange with a Danish high school, and created opportunities to bring civics activities to all grades of the school. Our overarching goal is to contribute to a healthy, diverse democracy.

Students from Twinfield will be traveling to Denmark for two weeks at the end of September. Then in late October, Twinfield families will host Danish students as the next part of the exchange.

The Twinfield Democracy Project is hosting a fundraiser sprout tournament next Thursday. Click here to see a flyer with more information.

Middle School Wellness

Shout out to the incoming Freshman for helping with this Wellness Mural as eighth graders. This class ended the school year working with a local muralist, Matt Denton, to design a mural that represented what Wellness looks like at Twinfield. They highlighted the outdoors, music, mentorship, exercising, and nature. What a great way to welcome everyone to our school!

Student Voice

We are continuing our partnership with Up For Learning with a focus on building youth adult partnerships. The 9th grade students and TAs will be developing leadership skills, increasing student voice and engagement in decision making, and setting personal goals to support students in their first year of high school. They will have four retreats throughout the year; the first retreat will be September 16.

They will also be completing a yearlong research project to increase student engagement and improve the student experience in high school.

Throughout the year, we will be highlighting different parts of our TUS Student and Family Handbook. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Attendance
The best way for students to fully access their education and grow as learners is to be present. Parents and guardians play a vital role in ensuring that their child is in school and in class every day throughout the school year. The TUS Attendance Policy can be viewed here.

School attendance is mandatory beginning at the age of six in accordance with Vermont State Statute. Due to the hands-on, interactive nature of learning in our classrooms, it is essential that students be present and prepared to actively participate. To maximize the value of their education we strongly encourage you to make every effort to schedule medical, dental and other appointments before and after school hours. In order for you to best plan your vacation time we have a detailed school calendar for you to reference so your child will not miss out on important assignments and events.

  • The school day for all students will begin at 8:20.
  • Dismissal will be at 2:50 Monday-Thursday.
  • On Fridays only, students will be dismissed at 2:00.
  • The school doors open at 7:30 for students to go to the cafeteria if they need to arrive early. Students may not arrive before 7:30; staff are not available at that time.

Students who ride the bus will be dropped off and picked up at the front of the building. Family drop off and pick up will be in the rear of the building. Staff will be at both locations to greet students and support as needed.

Parents/guardians are expected to call Ella King, administrative assistant, at (802) 426-3213 ext. 207 each day that their child will be absent from or late to school. If no call is received, the school will contact parents/guardians at home and/or at work to verify absence. If no contact is made, parents/guardians are expected to send a note of excuse when the student returns to school.
When possible, families should connect with classroom teachers or TAs to help students catch up on missed learning.
Absences are considered excused if they are caused by:
  • Student illness (a doctor’s note is required for absences of five or more consecutive days)
  • Family emergencies
  • Emergency medical or dental intervention
  • Religious holidays

Excessive Absences and Tardies
Because consistent attendance at school is vital to students’ academic growth, Twinfield takes absenteeism seriously. In the event that a student is excessively absent or tardy (excused or unexcused), the following steps may be taken:
1. Parents/guardians will receive a call from their child’s homeroom teacher or TA to discuss the attendance issue and make a plan for improvement.
2. If absence/tardiness continues, parents/guardians will be contacted by school administration.
3. Lastly, parents/guardians will be contacted by the truant officer, who may initiate the assistance of DCF and the Vermont State’s Attorney’s office.
Late Arrival
Students are expected to arrive at school in time to prepare for class at the beginning of the school day. Students who arrive late must sign in at the main office before going to class. Failure to do so will result in the student being marked absent for the day and parents/guardians being contacted. Other consequences may apply including loss of driving privileges for licensed high school students.
Early Dismissal
Students who must leave the school for any reason (e.g., medical appointments) during the school day must have permission from parents/guardians, who may call in an early dismissal or send a permission note stating the time, date and reason for dismissal. Parents/guardians must pick up and sign out their student in the main office.
Participation in Activities
In order to attend or participate in any extracurricular activity, including athletics, dances, musical events and club activities, a student is expected to attend school for the full day, on the day of the activity. The student will not be allowed to resume participation in activities until they have attended a full day of school. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the administration in advance.
